Bio:

Virginia Casanova first stepped into pottery as a form of therapy, starting with beginner classes at the Visual Arts Studio of Richmond 14 years ago. Having given up on painting because of perfectionist tendencies, Virginia followed her counselor’s suggestion to explore an art form for which she didn’t already have a standard. Since she also hated getting her hands dirty, pottery seemed like the perfect way to conquer two issues at once! Throughout the journey, clay has taught her persistence in the face of failure, the art of embracing imperfections in herself and others, and the joy of the journey rather than the fight for the finished product. Virginia now considers herself a recovering perfectionist and is a current member of the ArtHaus Clay Studio in Bon Air, VA. Pottery continues to be therapy, but also serves as her chosen form of art. She still struggles with getting her hands dirty…that one promises to be a lifelong journey!

Artist's Statement

I have learned the art of wheel throwing mostly through community studies and have had the privilege of taking classes with a couple of Master Potters in the Richmond area. I like crafting functional pieces with a bit of an artistic flair where possible. Pottery is an outlet for my desire to imitate what I find beautiful in the world. I believe that something of what we see, touch and use every day should in some way inspire our souls, or at the very least make us smile. I hope you enjoy using these pieces as much as I enjoyed creating them.
